- French – Elementary @ LUC and/or Level A2/B1 Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Recommended course(s):
- Four to six years of French lessons at college or high school level (with good results)
Students that do not meet this prerequisite should contact the instructor regarding the required competencies before course allocation.
Description
Participants learn the specific language use which they need in the most frequently occurring situations or to speak about concrete or abstract topics. Various aspects of French life and French customs are covered. Participants study grammar and vocabulary and practice these skills in a communicative context. French is the language of instruction. Participants are expected to prepare for the lessons at home (approximately two hours per lesson).
Course Objectives
The course objective is a B1+/B2 level. The required competences for a B2 language level can be described as follows:
Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics including technical discussion in his/her field of specialization.
Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Mode of instruction
This course reinforces the language skills of students who already have a basic school knowledge of French and develops the full range of communication skills in speaking, reading, listening, understanding and writing. Course content includes grammar practice, vocabulary development, listening, speaking, presentation, text study and writing activities. The course is based on language learning books and involves a lot of self-study at home. The teaching method is communicative and classes are held mainly in French. A Brightspace site will support the course, hosting a toolbox, the course syllabus + weekly overview, assignments and assessments.
Assessment Method
Listening comprehension exams, week 7 + 14 (TBC) : 20%
Oral presentations + discussions, week 7 +14 (TBC) : 20%
Written exams (x4): reading/vocabulary/grammar, week 4 + 7 + 11 + 14 (TBC) : 40%
Writing composition (week 8 + 16): 10%
In class participation (tests / homework): 10%, on-going

Registration
Courses offered at Leiden University College (LUC) are usually only open to LUC students and LUC exchange students. Leiden University students who participate in one of the university’s Honours tracks or programmes may register for one LUC course, if availability permits.
