Course
2024-2025

Admission requirements

High school level biology or some self-study through provided materials before or near the beginning of the course.

Description

This course integrates knowledge from biology and chemistry to understand the human body and health-related issues. The course balances between deepening knowledge of biology and exploration of case studies to apply this knowledge. After covering cell biology and the genetic bases of life, we will discuss several important systems which are key in to understanding health, including the endocrine system, the immune system, respiratory system and the cardiovascular system. The course takes an applied approach by learning science through applications and case studies related to health.

It prepares students for more in-depth understanding for courses in the health sciences track of the Global Health, Innovation and Society major, enabling students to bridge the scientific and social dimensions of health.

Course Objectives

After successful completion of this course students can:

  • Define and discuss key concepts in biology at different scales, ranging from molecular to individual level;

  • Identify and describe the structure and function of important biological systems, including the endocrine system, the immune system and the cardiovascular system;

  • Understanding biological pathways of disease;

  • Apply scientific knowledge to real world case studies related to health

  • Interpret scientific literature and apply research findings related to biomedical science, to case studies related to human health.

Timetable

Timetables for courses offered at Leiden University College in 2024-2025 will be published on this page of the e-Prospectus.
