Description
This is a comparative course which deals with the development and present dynamics of parties and party systems across the globe. The course mainly consists of a series of sessions dealing with the main theoretical, comparative and empirical approaches to the study of parties and party systems. There will also be a series of tutorials/guest lectures focused specifically on political parties and party systems in different regions of the world, including the established democracies of Western Europe, as well as the most recent democracies in Latin America, Eastern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. We will look at the parties in some countries of these regions and try to understand their similarities and differences. We will also attempt to work out what role they play in these different political systems. Students are expected to read a wide range of literature on comparative developments and contribute actively to the discussions in class. The working language in this course is English.
