Immigration rules as a problem of unequal treatment

Aims

An introduction in the way lawyers deal with the distinction between nationals and non-nationals in the shaping of immigration law. The following subjects will be adressed:

  • Ethics of migration law: is migration right or wrong?

  • How law works, especially with regard to immigration.

  • What is the reason for treating immigrants unequal to nationals? What does that mean for their chances to integration?

  • Opinions of the Dutch Commission on Equal Treatment concerning the issue of discrimination on grounds of nationality.

  • Differential treatment of asylum seekers and immigrants seeking family reunification.

Examination

Students are required to write an essay in the course of the curriculum which must be handed in ultimately on 18 December 2009. The subject for the paper will be announced at the beginning of the course. The mark for this paper counts as the mark for an exam.
