Seminar Human Origins: An integrative approach

BA degree (or equivalent) in archaeology or a relevant discipline.
SAP and exchange students: admission after approval by the Graduate School of Archaeology.

Description

This course gives an in-depth confrontation with various models dealing with the evolution of the human niche, with a heavy emphasis on studies of Neandertal energetics, life histories and hunting difficulties, and application of these to the Neandertal fossil and archaeological record encountered in the Palaeolithic Europe: An introduction course.

Learning outcomes

  • Obtaining knowledge of various models dealing with the development of the human niche;

  • Ability to give a critical analysis of competing models;

  • Improvement of presentation skills, both oral and in writing.

Mode of delivery

Seminar, based on literature study and written assignments.

Assessment

  • Active participation;

  • Written assignments.
