MCB Laboratory Skills

Description

Learning basic elements of the following techniques: pipetting, preparing solutions, dilution series, electrophoresis, sterile work, decontamination, light microscopy. Some simple standard molecular biological experiments will be performed, usually as part of the first research project.

Study material

As a reference is available in the laboratory: Sambrook et al.: A laboratory manual, Cold Spring Harbor Press. Furthermore, standard protocols available on intranet of the IBL and material handed out by the supervisor.

Examination

The supervisor of the MSc research project will test whether the experiments were carried out satisfactory using a checklist

Course requirements/recommendations

The courses Fundamentals of MCB and Orientation on MCB Research should be finished, and the first MSc research project should be arranged.

Course objective

Learning and demonstrating basic experimental skills needed for genetic engineering, protein determination and visualisation techniques.

Remarks

This part of the course is obligatory before starting the MSc research project. In the case of strong deficiencies, additional training has to be arranged during the main research project or a bachelor course has to be followed first.
