Description
Purpose: 1. Students will learn about the main theories, issues and debates in the field of International Political Economy. 2. Through class assignments, students will hone their writing, research and participation skills.
Content: This course introduces students to the field of International Political Economy (IPE) – the study of the changing relationships between states, markets, and societies around the globe. Students will learn about key IPE theories, issues and debates. Theories covered include: liberalism, mercantilism, structuralism, constructivism and feminism. Key debates to be discussed include: the current economic crisis; tensions between competing models of global trade and finance; regionalism; how “emerging economies”, like China and India, are reshaping the global economy; how social groups influence markets and states; globalization and global inequality; global governance and transnational financial regulation; and the “illicit” global economy (like drug trafficking and blood diamonds).
