This course builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in the following Bachelor courses: Leren en leraar en Ontwikkelen van krachtige leeromgevingen.

Description

The primary aim of the module (which builds on the previous Master course Professional development & Learning) is to understand, be able to articulate, and add to current debates on mentoring theory and practice. This includes critical evaluation of current research in mentoring and the underpinning meta-theoretical assumptions which underpin the various approaches.

A secondary aim of the module is to enable students to critically examine a variety of approaches to mentoring in order to inform one’s own mentoring position.

Course objectives

The objectives of the course are to:

  • Develop critical awareness and understanding of the theory and practice of mentoring and coaching in a range of ‘live’ settings, with particular relevance to education (achievement levels 1-4);

  • Appreciate the effects, advantages and disadvantages of the various applications of mentoring and coaching skills in a range of contexts (3);

  • Acquire and practise the skills of mentoring and coaching (4);

  • Create opportunities for participants to evaluate critically the relevant literature (5, 6);

  • Enable participants to develop an understanding of the links and tensions between theory and practice (10-12);

  • Appreciate the complex moral dimensions of mentoring and coaching.(16-19).

The formulated general Master achievement levels are applicable to this course in various degrees.

Please note that separate uSis registration is mandatory for lectures, seminars, exam and re-exam.

  • Registration for the lectures of the course is possible as of two months through one week before the first lecture at the latest;

  • Registration for the seminars of the course is possible as of two months through one week before the first lecture at the latest;

  • Registration for the exam is possible as of two months through one week before the exam at the latest;

  • Registration for the re-exam is possible as of two months through one week before the re-exam at the latest.

Students who don’t register cannot attend classes or take the (re)exam.
