Admission requirements

Admission is conditional on submission for the minor Entrepreneurship for Society
A knowledge of Dutch is not necessary. You should have obtained your propedeuse before starting this minor.

Description

This module explores the development and usage of transdisciplinary research designs. Specifically, the course focuses on the design, advantages, and disadvantages of qualitative, quantitative, and action research methodologies to answer research problems that transcend traditional scientific disciplines like public administration, the life sciences, and economics. Case-selection strategies and common threats to internal and external validity of different research approaches will also be covered. Students will develop and present their own transdisciplinary research proposal for a chosen problem of interest and will critique each other’s work at a general concluding conference.

Course objectives

  • to learn how to write a proposal for a transdisciplinary research project

  • to understand the advantages and disadvantages of different methodological designs for transdisciplinary research

  • to understand the most common problems associated with empirical studies, and to develop strategies for solving them.

  • In the week of Sept 8: 3 hour lecture

  • In the week of Sept 15: 3 hour lecture

  • In the week of Sept 22: 3 hour lecture

  • In the week of Sept 29: 3 hour lecture

  • In the week of Okt 6: 3 hour lecture

  • In the week of Okt 13: 3 hour lecture

  • In the week of Oct 27: 2 day Literature findings Seminar.

Mode of instruction

Seminars, workshops, expert lectures

Assement method

  • Obligatory attendance of the lectures and work groups ( Pass or Fail);

  • Observation report (Pass or Fail);

  • Intermediate research proposal (30%);

  • Final action research proposal (70%).
