Description

This course serves as an introduction to the Phonology, Phonetics, and Morphology of the Portuguese language. Readings and lectures will discuss the distinctions between phonetics and phonology and examine the interfaces between phonetics, phonology, and morphology. Topics covered include phonological opposition and alternation, phonotactics, phonetic transcription (using the IPA), nominal/verbal inflection and derivation, and variation as it relates to all three areas of study. |

Course objectives

—Students will be able to distinguish between and describe the principal areas of study in each area (Phonology, Phonetics, Morphology).
—Students will be able to phonetically transcribe utterances in Portuguese using the IPA.
—Students will be able to apply the main concepts in phonology, phonetics, and morphology to carry out basic linguistic analyses in Portuguese.

Course Load

  • Total load for the course (5 EC =140 hours) is the following: – 28 hours = Hours spent on attending lectures and seminars – 112 hours = preparation for lectures and tests; research for the final project; completing assignments and the final paper

Assessment method

Two (2) written examinations that will include closed questions (for example multiple choice) and essay questions. Both examinations with be worth 50% of the total grade. To complete the final mark, please take notice of the following:

1) the final grade for the course is established by determining the weighted average

Blackboard will be used for course announcements and some course materials, as well as for some group work.
