Academic Skills 4 - Critical Review

Description

In the first year undergraduate courses (1) Text Interpretation, (2) Argumentation, (3) Book Review, and (4) Critical Review, students practice a cumulative series of academic skills that are essential to social scientific study and research. These skills will form the foundation of students’ studies throughout the International Relations and Organization program.

Course objectives

Students who complete the course successfully should gain a better understanding of:

  • How to assess the quality of scientific articles;

  • The key elements addressed in a scientific paper (e.g., research question, theoretical framework, research findings, further research steps).

Students who complete the course successfully should improve their ability to:

  • Identify the core of an article;

  • Explain how various articles are related to each other along several dimensions (e.g., reflection on the structure and quality of the research; added value and readability).
