Fine Arts: Graphic design 1

Course
2019-2020

Entrance requirements

Participation in an entrance exam that will consist of a motivation interview with the teacher and an assessment of your artistic work. The entrance exam for Graphic Design 1 is Wednesday 4 september 2019. After your online application the KABK will contact you at the end of August.

More information about the entrance requirements of Graphic Design 1: Students present a portfolio before they start the course. While it could of course be useful, students are not required to possess technical skills in Adobe’s Creative Suite, the conventional software used in graphic design. However, it is necessary to have the ability to visualise your thoughts and ideas in images. You need to be able to translate both images and language in a variety of ways. Talent is certainly desirable. What that entails is not easy to define, and drawing up a list would be an endless task. In any case, techniques and skills that a student could have prior to beginning the course include drawing, writing, organising text and images, lettering, painting, editing work, performance, photography, filming, programming and thinking in multiple pages (such as with the pages of a book and with various forms of social media). A student should be motivated to participate in group discussions. An open attitude is also desirable. In order to keep the work process going, the student is expected to take feedback from the instructor and classmates to heart, as well as to question it.

Description

In Graphic Design 1, students are given many different short assignments in a brief period of time. This familiarizes them with the field of Graphic Design in a playful and dynamic way. The assignments include exercises using both traditional and digital techniques. Students are challenged to develop their own working method and distinctive characteristics and to adapt them in combination with techniques they already possess. Now and then, students will also be asked to collaborate in order to stimulate unexpected results.

Learning objectives

At the end of the academic year, students will have become familiar with various working techniques and have worked on a wide variety of assignments. They will have tried out various techniques and exercises, such as silk-screen, large scale design, unusual formats and volumes, working with the Risograph, collage, typography and font design, poster design, simple writing exercises, designing booklets and editing skills. They will be able to carry out simple tasks with the appropriate graphics software. Students will have an idea about how they can use graphic design techniques to give concrete form to their ideas. For me, graphic design is a medium for expressing myself. In class I hope to share my knowledge with students dynamically and with enthusiasm.
