Admission requirements

This course is an (extracurricular) Honours Class: an honours elective in the Honours College programme. There are limited spots available for second-year or third-year non-honours students. Admission will be based on motivation.

Description

A society without conflicts is an Utopia! Every day you are introduced to small or complex disputes on different social levels in the world. Conflicts and the way we deal with them play an important part of our personal and professional life. Not only our personal skills are important in dealing with these complex situations. Also understanding of the development of the process and recognition of other aspects which play an important role in solving difficult disagreements will help you to achieve better results.

This Honours Class will introduce you in the science and practice of dispute resolution and negotiation on different social levels (international, business, and personal). You will learn to analyse different conflicts and will be able to train and expand your skills.

Course objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  • know about the science and practice of dispute resolution and negotiation on different social levels (international, business, and personal);
  • be able to analyze different conflicts and will be able to train and expand your mediation skills.

Timetable

This course will be offered thrice; once in the first semester in English and twice in the second semester in Dutch and English. The 6 lectures will take place on Thursday evening from 17.00 to 21.00. For the third edition lectures are scheduled on Thurday evenings as well as Tuesday evenings, 17-21 hrs.

Course Load

This course is worth 5 EC, which means the total course load equals 140 hours.

Assessment Method

  • 70% Individual assignment of 2000 words
  • 30% Group assignment of 3000 words

Students can only pass this course after successful completion of all partial exams.

Please note: Attendance is compulsory.

Blackboard and uSis

Blackboard will be used in this course. Students can register for the Blackboard site two weeks prior to the start of the course.

Please note: students are not required to register through uSis for the Honours Classes. Your registration will be done centrally.
