Admission requirements

Math C (wiskunde C) at VWO level or equivalent is assumed. This course is only available for BA linguistics students.

Description

In this course students will get familiar with basic concepts in methodology and descriptive statistics necessary to conduct research in (experimental) linguistics such as the empirical cycle, measurement and observation, reliability and validity, sampling, (quasi-) experimental design, central tendency and variability, the normal distribution, relationsips between variables and describing and explaining variance.

Students will acquire practical skills of data analysis through several assignments that are imbedded in experimental linguistics research.

The course consists of obligatory lectures and workroups.

This course is the compulsory basis for Statistics II.

Course objectives

Learning goal 1: student is able to describe core concepts of methods and techniques in (experimental) linguistics such as the emprirical cycle, variables, measurement level, reliability and validity, sampling, the normal distribution, central tendency and variability, distributions, association, experimental design.

Learning goal 2: student is able to use SPSS software for descriptive statistics

Course Load

Total course load 5 x 28 hours= 140 hours

  • Lectures: attending lectures: 10 x 2 = 20 hours

  • Attending workgroups: 10 x 1 = 10 hours

  • Completing assignments: 10 x 5 = 50 hours

  • Study of compulsory literature: 60 hours (about 300 pages)

  • Exam(s): 1 x 2 hours = 2 hours

Assessment method

(1) Multiple choice exam (learning goal 1) (2) Assignments (learning goal 2)

In order to pass:

(1) Mutliple choice exam must be 55% correct after correction for guessing; (2) 9/10 assignments need to be sufficient (submitted in time and of sufficient quality).

The final mark is based on the multiple choice exam.

Student are allowed to miss a maximum of 1 lecture and 1 practical. Handing in at least 9 out of 10 assignments of sufficient quality is obligatory in order to be eligible to participate in the exam.

The exam can be retaken, the assignments cannot be retaken (the student will be asked to re-submit an assignment when it is of insufficient quality).
