Admission requirements

This course is open to all students of the Faculty of Humanities.

Description

Nowadays large amounts of digital texts are available in libraries, archives and other institutions that have been working on digitizing their collections. Digital publications on internet, social media posts and blogs are another important source of information in digital age and their amount is growing faster than ever before. Vast amounts of textual data are offering a lot of opportunities, but also pose a lot of challenges. How do we process different file formats? How can we get data from archives or somebody’s blog post? Is it legal? How can we classify 10.000 documents or extract relevant information from them? This course aims at providing a theoretical and practical knowledge in working with digital text, from downloading, creating and storing text in digital format to application of methods and tools required to classify texts and extract information from them.

Course objectives

After successfully completing the course students will:

  • be able to distinguish between different file types, their definitions and applications;

  • understand main challenges in working with data from digital archives, literary texts and social media texts;

  • possess practical skills necessary for the digital text search and analysis;

  • be able to apply intellectual property rights to the downloading and sharing of data.

Weighing

  • Assignments: (30 percent of grade)

  • Final Exam: (70 percent of grade)

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average. In order to pass the course, students must have a grade of at least 5.5 for both Assignments and the Final Exam

Resit

A resit is possible for the Final Exam.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

Remarks

Attendance and active participation are obligatory. Students are required to prepare for and attend all sessions. The convenors need to be informed without delay of any classes missed for a good reason (i.e. due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, family issues, problems with residence permits). The maximum of such absences during a semester is two. Being absent without notification and/or more than two times can result in exclusion from the term end exams and a failing grade for the course.

  • Dispensation from the attendance policy for extenuating circumstances can only be granted by the Board of Examiners. after consultation with the coordinator of studies.
