Admission requirements
This course is only for first-year 120EC students who will leave for Shandong in semester 2.
The course is taught in Mandarin. Students must have a prior level of Mandarin at least equivalent to new HSK 4 (old HSK 5) or TOCFL level 3. They must also meet all entry requirements for the MA Asian Studies: Chinese Studies.
Students who can understand a wide variety of subjects in Chinese but find it challenging to understand and talk in formal Chinese, such as news, TV programs, formal speech, talks on specific academic topics should take this course.
Description
In order to help students develop their oral/aural proficiency in their academic fields of study, the selection of course materials is based on students’ academic interests, such as Chinese culture & society, economy, history, and politics. No textbook is used for this course; all materials are selected from a wide range of online resources (TV programs, online news websites, podcasts and so on).
The course includes three components: before-class tasks, class activities, and oral presentations. Before-class tasks are internet-based and consist of listening comprehension and preparation for vocabulary and grammar. Class activities include group discussion and oral presentations. Students are required to give oral presentations related to their research interests.
Students are also expected to be thoroughly prepared and to contribute actively.
Course objectives
•Help MA students currently at an advanced-mid level to develop their oral/aural proficiency by working with authentic audio materials.
•Train students in how to give oral presentations in their research field, with special attention to fluency, vocabulary and familiarity with IT resources.

The resit for the final exam is only available to students whose mark of the final exam is insufficient. The resit will then make up 100% of the mark.
