Description

The practical work consists of 2 weeks of fieldwork (5 ects). You will be trained in a variety of archaeological field techniques, focusing on prospection and excavation of archaeological sites and the recording and interpretation of the collected data.

Course objectives

After completion of this course, the student:

  • can apply a set of practical archaeological fieldwork and sampling techniques on an elementary level;

  • has gained knowledge of and insight into the specific archaeological digging methods and techniques and will know which one to use under which conditions;

  • can distinguish signs of human activity from natural formation processes, soils and deposits;

Timetable

The Fieldschool is scheduled for May. Students will be divided into four groups; so the exact timetable will depend on your group. The group allocation will be posted on BlackBoard in April 2017

Mode of instruction

Practical assignments on location.

Course load

The course load will be distributed as follows:

  • 2 weeks fulltime fieldwork with associated daily field notes and final Field school report (5 ects).

Assessment method

The final grade is composed of

  • practical skills, based on field assignments and attendance (50 %);

  • final Field school report (50%).
    The individual grades cannot be compensated. Due to practical reasons it is not possible to retake the practical part in the same year.

The deadline for the final Field school report is 1 week after your last field day. The report must be handed in through BlackBoard and Turnitin. Only if the practical results from the Field school have received a passing grade, you are allowed to write the final Field school report. This cannot be stressed enough: it is not possible to pass the Field school while lacking competence in the appropriate fieldwork techniques.

Plagiarism will be reported to the Board of Examiners.
