Theater and Film

With this minor you will acquire knowledge of the history, conventions and storytelling strategies of the most important Western dramatic media, in particular film and theater. You get a cultural-historical overview of the development of the most important genres, conventions and style figures, whereby film and theater are compared with each other (in the course "Introduction to Dramatic Media"). We also look at the role of genres in the history of film (in 'Film genres'), we compare different western and non-western national film traditions (in 'World cinema'), we analyze the dramatic and narrative aspects of 'quality series' on television (in 'Film and TV series') and we study theoretical texts on theatricality and performance.

During the minor you watch a large number of films and theater performances, and you are asked to analyze them critically. The emphasis of the minor is on analyzing the functioning of film, television and theater. Why do moving images disturb, disturb, fascinate or annoy us? What strategies do actors, directors, writers, composers use to manipulate and engage the film, theater and television audience? We also look at theories about theater and film. What did philosophers, psychologists and critics such as Aristotle, Freud, Bazin, Mulvey and Deleuze say about film and theater?
