Programme Research in Physics, pre-PhD (Casimir)
The ‘Casimir pre-PhD’ specialisation is offered under the auspices of the Casimir Research School, a joint effort of the LION, and various departments at the Delft University of Technology. It is a selection track that can be followed from the three specialisations Theoretical Physics, Biological and Soft Matter Physics, and Quantum Matter and Optics.
This specialisation offers research projects in both Leiden and Delft and requires students to participate in at least one research project at each location.
The programme follows a strict schedule, with the first year devoted to laying the theoretical basis, and the second year to a combination of short intensive research projects and a long MSc thesis project, culminating in the writing of a research proposal for a potential PhD project. The short projects and the proposal writing are special characteristics of the programme, aimed at broadening the research experience of the student.
In the second year of the programme, students will be given the opportunity to attend a Summer School at the start of the academic year. The study projects and MSc research project, scheduled for the second year, are to be carried out in different groups. The PhD research proposal is the last item in the programme. Study Plan
At the start of the Master’s programme, students are required to create a study plan: this plan includes a complete list of planned courses for two subsequent academic years in consultation with the Study Advisor Physics
