Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology
Description
Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology is a social science. Anthropologists investigate the ways in which people give meaning to different aspects of their life and the way they interact with each other, by looking at issues of diversity, gender, religion, economic and political behaviour, and use of (social) media. Students get acquainted with anthropological approaches to studying society by learning about (and practicing with) its research methods and its modes of representation.
Preparation for the Master CA-DS
Finishing this minor in combination with a Bachelor of Arts form the Faculty of Humanities (including International Studies) will grant admission to the Master in CA-DS, and specifically the specialisations “Global Ethnography” and “Sociology of Policy in Practice”. For admission to “Visual Ethnography” there are additional requirements.
In cases when this minor is combined with other bachelor programmes the Admissions Committee CA-DS will decide on individual bases whether the student still has deficiencies that need to be bridged by an additional pre-master programme.
Time table
This programme is spread throughout the year, with courses in each of the 4 blocks: 5 to 10 EC per block (15 EC per semester).
Time tables for each course, including the room numbers, are available from June 2019 via the course descriptions (below) and off course via Usis after course enrollment. Under Files you will find a schematic overview of the minor as spread through the academic year 2019-20.
The first two courses (in block 1) work with tutorial groups to which minor students will be enrolled by the student administration. (It is not possible to choose a specific group in advance.)
Admission
This minor is open in the first place to the bachelor students of Leiden University (with the exception of students who already study CA-DS as a major) and also students of TU Delft and Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Students from other universities can also participate if the available places are not taken by students from LU, TUD, and EUR and can apply by contacting the Student Services Center (link below) between 1 and 15 August.
The maximum number of participants is 40, including the reserved places for TUD and EUR students.
NB: Please note that minor should be completed within ONE academic year, because the programme can change next year. If by some chance you do not finish the minor within this academic year, you can try to finish it next year. IN this case, students of Leiden University do NOT need to enroll for the whole minor again. You need to contact Studen Services Centre by email (osc@leiden.edu) and they will enroll you for the courses you need to re-take (you will only need to enroll for exams).
Students from EUR and TUD do need to apply for the whole minor again as they did once already, in order to be enrolled as student at Leiden University."
