Objectives

Graduates of the master’s programme in German Language and Culture have the following skills:

• differentiated knowledge and understanding of the important aspects of German language, literature and culture, from the Middle Ages to the present;

• knowledge and understanding of a representative corpus of primary and secondary sources from each of the disciplines involved;

• differentiated knowledge and understanding of relevant theories in each of the disciplines involved;

• differentiated knowledge and understanding of the social and cultural processes within the German language area in which the above-mentioned sources and theories play an important role;

• an advanced level of Dutch-German intercultural competence;

• the ability to make use of theoretical insights and specialist academic argumentation in order to formulate research questions at an adequate level of abstraction, and report on the results of this research in German;

• the professional competence required at the entrance level of a PhD research project or an upper secondary teaching qualification track;

• a C2 level competence in presentations (both oral and written) and publications in German, under the assumption that the starting level was C1.

After completing this programme, students will have the knowledge and competence required for positions outside the university that require an academic level of thinking, for an upper secondary teaching qualification (Educational Master) or for a PhD position.

Programme

Structure
The programme spans one year and carries 60 ec in total. The programme consists of 40 ec of courses and a 20 ec thesis. Each of the individual courses counts for 5 ec.
Students are required to follow a minimum of 15 ec in courses related to their specialisation or the master’s thesis.

You may choose courses up to 25 ECTS from the courses offered within this specialisation under the following conditions:

• a minimum of 10 ECTS must be devoted to subjects outside the specialisation (courses on cultural and literary studies)

• a minimum of 10 ECTS must be chosen out of courses offered by one of our fellow universities; the subjects of these courses may be connected to your specialisation or not.

Workload
This master’s specialisation has a workload of one year (60 ECTS). All courses have a workload of 5 ECTS. The track Linguistics offers several courses. You can choose from a great number of courses up to 45 ECTS. Take your pick.

Specialisations
The programme contains two specialisation tracks: Linguistics, and Literature and Culture.

Master’s thesis and requirements for graduation

In order to graduate, students must have completed a total of 60 ects, as well as their
master’s thesis. The master’s thesis for the programme in German Language and Culture
carries 20 ects and generally consists of a maximum of 17,000 words, including notes,
bibliography and appendices. The topic of the thesis must be related to the student’s
chosen specialisation, and the writing process must be supervised by a staff member of
the student’s home university.
