Digital Humanities and Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI), ‘Big Data’, and digital methods have become an integral part of everyday life, transforming industries, communication, personal interactions and research. Their presence is increasingly felt in fields ranging from healthcare to entertainment, and of course the Humanities. These digital technologies havereshaped how we study language, culture, and history and how we understand ourselves as human beings. AI's impact in particular offers new tools for analysis, while also raising important questions about the future of creativity, critical thinking, and ethical considerations.
The Digital Humanities and Artificial Intelligence minor teaches BA students from all backgrounds and levels of digital expertise new ways to analyse and study cultures and languages. Our minor provides hand’s on and theoretical insight into how digital methods and artificial intelligence (AI) are changing our personal lives and societies. The programme provides an introduction to the critical application of computational methods and thinking in a wide range of humanities and social science subjects including linguistics, literature, history, the arts, religious studies, and media and area studies.
Our courses provide theoretical grounding in digital media and technology studies as well as specific skills in a range of useful tools, such as Python, R, text analysis, data analysis and visualization, AI models, podcasting, video essays, Wordpress, html and css, and more. The minor includes a sixth, ‘Capstone’ course (Special Topics in Digital Humanities), in which students design and run a Digital Humanities or AI project related to their own interests under the close supervision of a staff member.
No matter your experience level and comfort, you will develop analytic, communicational and project management skills that have broad applicability and relevance for your future study and career. In addition to skills and new insight, the Digital Humanities minor also offers a community of friendly and interested staff and students from a wide array of backgrounds. You will be able to work together in our Digital Lab and AI Lab in the new Humanities Hub, a welcoming space that has all the equipment and expertise on hand to advance your knowledge of the digital world.
