The role of metabolomics in biological and pharmaceutical research will be described as well as the methods available (chromatographic methods, mass spectrometry, NMR spectrometry). The advantages as well as disadvantages of the various methods will be dealt with, using various applications as examples to illustrate this. The chemometric methods used to deal with the large data sets will be demonstrated.

Doelstelling
Getting accustomed to the systems biology approach in studying biological problems by using a holistic, non-targeted chemical analysis of an organisms phenotype under certain conditions.
Opmerkingen
This course is an introductory course. Once a year an international advanced course is given for which also a few Leiden University students (MSc and PhD level) can participate.
