Multilingual to Dutch Translation

Course
2020-2021

Admission requirements

Students should be sufficiently proficient in Dutch and at least one other language. This course can be taken separately from the Minor in Translation.

Description

It is a common misconception that any native speaker who also has a reasonable working knowledge of the Dutch language is qualified to be a translator. The aim of this introductory course on translation is to familiarize its participants with the challenges a translator faces. In the tutorials, we discuss the translations and editing assignments you have prepared at home. There will be two written translation examinations: one in the Reading Week and one at the end of the course.

Course objectives

  • Ability to translate reasonably complex texts (including specialist information or terminology) into grammatically and stylistically correct Dutch with the aid of a variety of resources (e.g., dictionaries and thesauri.

  • Ability to edit Dutch texts.
