“Globaliserend Afrika onderzoeken en begrijpen: een verkenning van de antropologie van Afrika”

Inleiding:
Het leidende idee van het college is om naar Afrika te kijken door de bril van de sociale en culturele antropologie, in de context van globalisering. Als voorbeelden van het globaliseringsdenken worden mobiliteit/migratie, ontwikkelingssamenwerking, en verschillende concrete case studies behandeld. Deze case studies hebben betrekking op: Pinksterkerken als voorbeeld van globale religies, migranten cultuur en literatuur, ontwikkeling van moderne technologie, en ontwikkelingssamenwerking. Centraal staat de beschouwing van cultuur en cultuur verandering. In de case studies wordt aandacht gegeven aan de manier waarop het onderzoek naar de processen wordt gedaan en tenslotte hoe de processen worden geanalyseerd. In de laatste colleges gaan we in op de methoden van dataverzameling van de antropologie en de wijze waarop de gegevens vertaald worden naar tekst of andere manieren van presentatie (film en foto, romans).
Na deze cursus kunnen de studenten: moderne vraagstukken over Afrika in relatie tot het ontwikkelingsvraagstuk kritisch benaderen; ontwikkeling bezien in een breed historisch en contemporain perspectief; hebben de studenten kennis opgedaan van de specifieke onderwerpen en begripen van globalisering, ontwikkeling/verandering en cultuur; en hebben de studenten kennis gemaakt met de manier waarop kennis wordt geproduceerd binnen de discipline antropologie.
Toetsing;
1. Actieve participatie in de colleges; 80% (30% cijfer)
2. Tijdens de colleges wordt ruimte gemaakt voor presentatie van de studenten van een literair werk, of een ethnografie (door de student zelf uitgezocht, suggesties tijdens eerste college) gerelateerd aan de thematiek van de college serie; iedere student presenteert een boek in relatie tot de inhoud van de colleges; dit verwerkt de student in een korte boekbespreking (30% cijfer);
3. De studenten schrijven een antropologisch essay van maximaal 6000 woorden. Uit het essay blijkt dat de student de stof en colleges goed heeft gevolgd. (40 % cijfer);
Literatuur voor de colleges wordt door de studenten gekopieerd van de algemene syllabus die bij het secretariaat van ASC wordt neergelegd (te combineren met een bezoek aan de bibliotheek!)

Globalisering: een wereld omvattend proces? De historische dimensie. Welke betekenis voor Afrika? Welke processen horen erbij (met toelichting van de keuze voor deze college serie: Migratie/mobiliteit; communicatie; ontwikkelingshulp)
Wat is cultuur? In welke contexten gebruikt de wetenschap cultuur in de context van ‘ontwikkeling’? Wat is ontwikkeling? Technologie, cultuur en ontwikkeling; communicatie, migratie/mobiliteit, ‘ontwikkeling als hulp’. Centraal ook staan begrippen van in- en uitsluiting en ongelijkheid.

In het ontwikkelingsvertoog, maar ook in het globaliseringsvertoog neemt Afrika een bepaalde positie in. Welke positie is dat? Welke beelden van Afrika gaan daarmee gepaard? Dit beeld van Afrika komt tot stand in een intersubjectiviteit. In het college gaan we in op wat die intersubjectiviteit is en hoe we ‘onze werkelijkheid’ van Afrika construeren.

In dit college wordt ingegaan op de discussies die gevoerd worden binnen het deelgebied ‘ontwikkelings antropologie’ en een inzicht gegeven hoe antropologen zich (kunnen) bezighouden met het ontwikkelingsdebat. We houden de antropologische benadering tegen het lichtvan de debatten die er vandaag de dag in Nederland worden gevoerd, o.a. zoals is aangezwengeld met de publicatie van het WWR rapport.
