Description
The open-air exhibition of modern sculpture is a phenomenon of post-war Europe, initiated by the artists who longed for new exhibition space and international cultural exchange. A few London based sculptors started in 1948 the Battersea Park show, in 1949 followed by the Dutch Circle of Sculptors (Sonsbeek, Arnhem) and in 1950 by the council of Antwerp (Middelheim). The fifties and sixties were the height day of this type of exhibition and international cultural exchange. It led to the acceptance of modern sculpture in the public space and to the creation of outdoor sculpture gardens by museums, private collectors and art galleries.
The goal of this workshop is to identify the players in this history, their differences and similarities, and their legacy. General literature onmodern sculpture and the way it is exposed will be verified. A reading list and possible paper topics will be supplied by the docent.
Course objectives
Gain knowledge of the sudden rise of a complicated artistic phenomenon in the public space, a still unwritten chapter in modern art history
Practice communicative skills in debates and presentation of research topic
Develop research skills in formulating a relevant research question
Develop writing skills by writing a paper on this subject of their own choice, with the possibility of publishing

Mode of instruction
Lecture and seminar meetings.
Attendance is compulsory. Students are allowed to miss a maximum of one seminar.
Course Load
The total course load is 140 hours (5 ec):
Ten meetings of 2 hours at museum = 20h
Contact hours = 10h
Reading secundary literature (2.500 pp) = 50h
Writing research paper (2.500 words) = 60h

Oral presentation and active involvement in class discussion (20%)
