East Asian Studies keuzepakket

The East Asian region is at the centre of political, economic, security and cultural developments in today’s world, signalling a shift in global power that will shape the 21st century. Whether the focus is on China’s burgeoning economy, relations between North and South Korea, or the popularity of Japanese anime and manga, East Asia is seldom out of the news. Interpreting these developments requires not only innovative methodological and theoretical tools, but also a deep appreciation of East Asian history, cultures, societies, philosophies, religious thought and practices to understand how the region’s past permeates through to the present. Students taking the East Asian Studies keuzepakket will be exposed to the distinct identities, cultures and societies of China, Japan, and Korea, as well as the shared interests and traditions of these states the bind the region together. A critical understanding of the East Asian region’s similarities and differences will be indispensable for graduates in an East Asian Century.

Students selecting the East Asian Studies keuzepakket will engage in a dynamic learning experience centred on an innovative range of courses that problematize issues, interactions, processes and dynamics that make East Asia a coherent region. At the same time, this keuzepakket will also highlight differences between the principal East Asian nations. As a result, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of East Asia from regional and nation-specific perspectives. They will nurture a comparative and critical mindset, and specialize in their chosen disciplinary track.

Studenten kiezen uit de volgende vijf trajecten:

1. Kunst en expressie (Art and Expression)
2. Hedendaagse sociale en culturele interacties (Contemporary Social and Cultural Interactions)
3. Geschiedenis van Oost-Azië (East Asian History)
4. Regionalisme, governance en transnationale netwerken (Regionalism, Governance and Transnational Networks)
5. Religie en wereldbeelden (Religions and Worldviews)

Binnen dit keuzepakket houdt Oost Azië in: China, Taiwan, Japan en de Koreas. Toch is de definitie van de Oost-Aziatische regio met opzet flexibel. Opvattingen over de samenhang en grenzen van Oost Azië zijn tijds- en plaatsgebonden en hangen af van disciplinaire benaderingen. Daardoor kan het zijn dat individuele vakken van dit pakket ook delen van Noord-Oost, Zuid en Zuid-Oost Azië behandelen. Daarnaast kan het ook dat Oost Azië in een brede kader van regionale of interregionale samenwerkingen en processen geplaatst wordt, zoals de Azië-Europa Meeting (ASEM), de historische ontwikkeling van transregionale handel en migratie of de verspreiding van het Boeddhisme.

Het scala aan keuzes dat dit pakket studenten biedt getuigd van de weelde aan expertise op het gebied van Oost Azië binnen het Leids Instituut van Area Studies (LIAS) en de grotere Leidse omgeving. Door de groei van deze expertise verwachten wij dat het aantal vakken dat de Oost-Aziatische regio als geheel als uitgangspunt neemt zal toenemen. Dat zal de reikwijdte en diepgang van het keuzepakket verder vergroten.

Dit keuzepakket heeft geen taalkundetraject. Studenten die geïnteresseerd zijn in het bestuderen van Oost-Aziatische taalkunde kunnen contact opnemen met professor R. Sybesma.
