Honours College Music

Honours education

Please note: the Honours College Music will not be available anymore in 2023-2024

Are you passionate about (playing) music and do you want to take part in the Honours College? You can! The Honours College offers two Music tracks: Practicum Musicae Honours and Honours College Music. These extracurricular tracks of 30 and 31 EC are part of the Individual track offered by the Faculty of Humanities. In order to ensure the high quality of these tracks, we work together with the Royal Conservatoire and the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts.

Honours College Music

Are you interested in music and would you like to deepen your theoretical music knowledge? Choose Honours College Music! This track offers you the chance to follow ‘elementary music theory’ at the Royal Conservatoire and elective courses at the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts. You will also follow one Honours Class and conclude your programme with the ‘The Capstone project’ of the Honours College Humanities Lab.

Elementary Music Theory

Elementary Music Theory (EMT) is a weekly, 75 minute group lesson. You will follow this course during the second and third year of your BA at the Royal Conservatoire. EMT is offered several times per week, so students can register for a timeslot that fits their timetable.
Language of instruction can be either Dutch or English (to be decided in mutual consultation).
Registration: If you are admitted to the programme, Caroline Cartens will take care of your registration for EMT.
Make sure you are registered as a student at the Royal Conservatoire!

Electives ACPA

You choose 10 EC worth of electives at the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, these electives are:

  • music related;

  • level 300, you are allowed to choose one course at level 200;

  • to be chosen from the ACPA electives Art and Science or the Minor Music Studies. Check the prospectus for an overview of the courses;

  • completed with an average grade of 8.0 or higher (no grade lower than 7.0).

Honours Class ACPA

You choose one Honours Class offered by the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts. An overview of the ACPA Honours Classes on offer is available in the prospectus.
Registration: via the Honours Academy application system. Check the Honours Academy website for more information. Twice a year, you will receive an email from the Honours Academy about upcoming application periods as well.

Honours Class

You choose one Honours Class from the entire list of Honours Classes offered.
This can be another music-related Honours Class offered by the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA) or a ‘regular’ Honours Class.

Capstone Project

The Capstone project is the Grande Finale of the Humanities Lab track. Teams of students from different disciplines work on a specific topic or problem and present their findings at a closing conference.
Registration: via the Humanities Lab. In the second semester of the third year of your BA you will receive an email from the Humanities Lab to register for the Capstone project.

Practicum Musicae Honours

Have you been playing an instrument or singing for a long time and achieved a high level of performance? Practicum Musicae Honours is your track! The content of Practicum Musicae Honours is quite similar to the regular Royal Conservatoire Practicum Musicae programme. However, you only take two years of courses at the Royal Conservatoire, follow one Honours Class and conclude your programme with the Capstone Project of the Honours College Humanities Lab.

Main Subject lessons

The Main Subject lessons are weekly, 50 minute individual lessons. Next to that you will have bi-weekly, 25 minute individual or duo coaching sessions. You will follow the Main Subject lessons and coaching sessions during the second and third year of your BA at the Royal Conservatoire. You schedule your lessons and sessions together with your tutor at the Royal Conservatoire, so you have a lot of flexibility.
Language of instruction can be either Dutch or English (to be decided in mutual consultation).
Registration: If you are admitted to the programme, Caroline Cartens will take care of your registration for your Main Subject lessons.
Make sure you are [registered as a student at the Royal Conservatoire!

At the end of the academic year, you will have to take an exam at the Royal Conservatoire: you will have to give a 20 minute performance for a committee. This committee will decide if you have reached the required level (and are admitted to the second year of the programme).

Honours Class

You choose one Honours Class from the entire list of Honours Classes offered.
This can be a music-related Honours Class offered by the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA) or a ‘regular’ Honours Class.

Honours College

The Honours College is an additional programme for ambitious and inquisitive Bachelor students who are looking for more challenge alongside their regular studies. Each Faculty has its own Honours College track. Honours College Music is part of the Humanities track, but is open to students from the entire university.
