European Union Studies
The influence of the European Union is far-reaching, from market-making to educational standards to democracy promotion – both in Europe and abroad. Yet, the European integration project also faces serious policy challenges ranging from the rise of illiberal populist political parties, ageing populations and the growing influence of non-Western powers.
In the near future, the success of the European Union as a global governance actor and as an economic integration project will require professionals who have a comprehensive understanding of its history, values, institutions, decision-making processes, points of conflict and cooperation among the member states, and its key challenges. Would you like to gain that deep knowledge of how the European Union works? And are you aware of and ready to make use of career opportunities that this knowledge may offer? As the European project touches upon more and more aspects of European citizens’ everyday lives, not only the EU institutions and national administrations, but also companies, non-profit organizations, media agencies, and think-tanks offer employment opportunities that require an excellent understanding of European affairs.
Courses
In this minor, you have the opportunity to learn about the European Union from the perspective of several disciplines – history, political science, economics, and law. These are taught through four core courses that provide students with comprehensive knowledge of the European Union’s institutions, economy, history, and current challenges. You can also tailor your learning experience by choosing two electives and deepen your knowledge of individual policy areas while working in small seminar groups. Check the Prospectus for details on our course offer.
Extracurricular
The European Union Studies minor seeks to combine academic study with a more practical understanding of the way the EU works. To that end, our programme organizes regular EU Seminars with representatives of EU institutions, politicians, journalists, activists, and other professionals.
Our students also have a chance to participate in the Humanities Career Office’s study trip to EU institutions in Brussels where they can learn more about the workings of the EU and meet our alumni who already work there.
