European Union Studies

The European Union acts as one of the most powerful economic actors in the global economy, presents itself as the most successful integration project in recent history, and deploys one of the largest diplomatic services in the world. The influence of the European Union is far-reaching, particularly in areas ranging from the internal market policy, educational standards, and even democracy promotion in territories beyond its borders. Yet, the European integration project faces serious policy challenges ranging from the rise of illiberal populist political parties, migration, ageing population and the emergence of rising non-Western powers, among others.

In the near future, the success of the European Union as a global governance actor and as an economic integration project requires professionals who have a comprehensive understanding of its history, values, institutions, decision-making processes, and key challenges. Yet, do you have deep knowledge of how the European Union works? Are you familiar with its history? And, finally, are you aware of and ready to make use of career opportunities that this knowledge may offer?

Our experience has taught us that many students from the humanities and social sciences end up in Brussels or The Hague as policy makers or professionals who are responsible for European policy-making and international affairs. Various companies, non-profit organizations, media agencies, and think-tanks also offer employment opportunities that require excellent understanding of European affairs.

The European Union Studies minor offers a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary overview of the European Union: its history and institutions, its decision-making process, and its key policies. In addition, it provides you with an understanding of the European Union’s influence on the global stage, the role of the Netherlands in the European Union, and the influence that organized interest groups have on European decision-making.

Upon completion of the programme, students will have acquired a thorough understanding of how the European Union works and will be able to apply this knowledge in a number of internships and employment opportunities. You may further decide to deepen your knowledge of the European Union by participating in the European Union Studies (International Relations) or European Law Master programmes.

You can register for this minor in uSis between 3 May and 15 July 2021
