The interdisciplinary Minor in Spanish, within the department of Latin American Studies, offers the opportunity to combine courses in Spanish American language with modules in the history, literature, culture and cinema of Spanish America.

Spanish America is an emerging sub-continent of 19 countries and over 500 million people. Each country has its particular history and cultural traditions, and it is a very important economic player in the world. Moreover, Spanish is spoken in other continents: in Spain, in Europe, and Equatorial Guinea, in Africa. Spanish has a very important presence in vast regions of the world. In the Philippines, where almost 1 million people still speak Spanish, and in the USA, where Spanish is the second language after English, and almost 55 millions people have Spanish as their mother tongue.

The Minor consists of 4 language/cultural modules: one of 10 ETCS and 2 of 5 ETCS (20 ETCS in total). In addition to the learning of Spanish, there are different combinations possible between Spanish American literature, Spanish American culture or Spanish American history (15 ETCS).

The Minor in Spanish American Studies begins in September and runs over the course of two semesters. Alongside this, Spanish 1 and 2 are likely to be offered again in semester 2 (starting in February but depending of staff resources).

The modules on offer can be taken as a whole package (30 credits) or in combination of 15 ETCS per semester (10 ETCS) language plus 5 ETCS content), or as individual options (provided the relevant requirements are met, as the case may be).
