Description
This course offers a general introduction to the field of linguistics. Part of the course is devoted to a brief overview of the “core” areas of linguistics: syntax, morphology, semantics, phonology, and phonetics. In addition, we consider a range of other topics, including first and second language acquisition, language pathology, language history and change, and social and regional variation in speech.
Course objectives
This course gives students:
an insight into what “language” is and what the scientific study of language involves;
an overview of the main areas within the field of linguistics;
a basic knowledge of key concepts in linguistics and methods in linguistic analysis;
a better insight into how “their language” (e.g., English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese) fits into the more general linguistic landscape.

Mode of instruction
Lecture (2 hours per week)
Assessment method
Written mid-term examination with closed questions; written final examination with closed questions. The final examination covers all subjects treated during the course.
Weighing
Mid-term exam: 40% of the final grade;
Final exam: 60% of the final grade.
To pass the course, the weighted average of the partial grades must be 5.5 or higher.
Resit
If the weighted average of the partial grade is lower than 5.5, a resit must be taken. The resit exam counts for 100%. There is no separate resit for the mid-term exam
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
