International Justice (LUC)

Home to the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, The Hague is the perfect backdrop to explore conceptions of justice in our global society. Justice issues related to human rights, peace, security and the environment present legal and policy challenges for governmental and non-governmental actors, international institutions, and civil society that extend beyond national borders and single disciplines. The International Justice major at Leiden University College is built around three key themes of law enforcement, human security and organisation and integration.

Major tracks:

  • International Law

  • Human Rights & Society

  • Integration & Statehood

  • IJ/GED co-convened track

  • Gender Studies

Major requirements:

  • 15 EC: compulsory 100-level courses, namely Public International Law, Introduction to Socio-legal Studies, and Sovereignty & Statehood

  • 20 EC: complete two of the following core Major tracks: International Law, Human Rights & Society, and Integration & Statehood. Completing a core track means completing courses worth 10EC in total in that track.

  • 10/15 EC: complete one additional track, either a third core track or one of the co-convened tracks

  • 10 EC: complete two of the following methodology courses: Legal Methods Lab, Philosophy of Law, Advocacy & Litigation, Qualitative Research Methods, and/or Research Design (IJ). Note that we strongly recommend that all students take Legal Methods Lab as it offers foundational skills for the major. We also suggest that all students intending on using qualitative methods (e.g. interviews/focus groups/surveys etc.) for their capstone take Qualitative Research Methods.

  • 10 EC: Capstone

  • 10/15 EC: complete additional IJ courses, one of which at the 300-level

  • NOTE: it is mandatory to complete at least four courses at the 300-level

NOTE: The Majors requirements as listed above apply to all students who start with their Major (i.e. Year 2) in 2018-2019. For the students who first enroll in our programme in 2018-2019 and who will therefore start with their Major (i.e. Year 2) in 2019-2020, the Major requirements will be different. For them, History of Science is no longer a compulsory Year 1 class. The 5ECTS of that course have been moved to the Major, meaning these students will need to complete 85ECTS towards their Major, including the compulsory Major-appropriate Research Design course:

EES: Research Design (EES)
GED: Foundations of Research Design
GPH: Research Design (GPH)
HD: Research Design (HD)
IJ: Research Design (IJ)
WP: Political Research Methods
